Welcome to Mission Dolores/Inner Mission

Hip urban neighborhoods with a strong community feel.

Mission Dolores and Inner Mission are two hip urban neighborhoods within San Francisco’s Mission District. The region’s name comes from the 1778 Mission San Francisco de Asis church—the city’s oldest surviving structure. Despite centuries of change and development in the area, the Mission District remains one of SF’s most thriving, bustling, and active communities. There’s always something to do or see.

The location and convenience these neighborhoods offer is unbeatable. Transportation options including multiple BART and Muni stations, bus lines, tech shuttles, and the nearby 101 and 280 highways make Downtown San Francisco, Oakland, and Silicon Valley all equally accessible. These neighborhoods are also insulated from the SF fog and blissfully sunny throughout the year. The eclectic housing options include Victorian row houses, contemporary low-rise condominiums, and loft conversions.

What to Love

  • Unique community feel
  • Neighborhood shops and restaurants
  • Ideal location with great transportation options
  • Murals and Dolores Park

People & Lifestyle

The true melting point of San Francisco, the Mission District is filled with every ethnicity, religion, and interest possible. The Latinx community has long been at the heart of life in Mission Dolores and Inner Mission and remains an integral part of its modern vibrancy. These ever-changing neighborhoods are also home to a diverse population comprised of young families, professionals, artists, students, and entrepreneurs.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

Almost every street within these vibrant neighborhoods has a beloved local restaurant. The Tartine Bakery on Guerrero Street and Tartine Manufactury on Alabama Street are sister establishments with world-class baked goods and famous quiche. Tartine’s owners have won the James Beard Award for America’s best pastry chefs, and a New York Times food columnist described Tartine as his favorite bakery in America.

Souvla is a great casual spot on Valencia Street with amazing Greek food, and The Morris is an unpretentious yet exceptional bistro on Mariposa Street with a menu of flavor-forward dishes informed by chef Gavin Schmidt’s travels around the world. The smoked duck here is a must-try, and expert sommeliers are on hand to help you sample the eatery’s extensive private wine collection.

Creative Mexican restaurant Californios is the perfect choice for a big celebration or special occasion. Californios’ lavish tasting menu, highly-trained staff, and low-key sophistication have earned it the distinction of two Michelin stars.

The area is also dotted with friendly neighborhood grocery stores such as Bi-Rite, family-run Gus’s Community Market, and the worker-owned Rainbow Grocery co-op. Mission Dolores and Inner Mission’s Hispanic heritage is still an essential part of life here, and many great taquerias and corner bodegas can be found.

Things to Do

Mission Dolores Park is a sloping neighborhood greenspace with spectacular Downtown SF views. This 16-acre park has lawns shaded by palm trees, six tennis courts, a basketball court, two soccer fields, two off-leash dog areas, and a variety of other multi-use sports fields and courts. Many events and celebrations take place at Dolores Park throughout the year.

One of the Mission District’s biggest festivals is Carnaval, which takes place at the end of May. This multicultural celebration sees colorful floats parade along Harrison Street and features international music and dance performances, arts-and-crafts vendors, and a variety of family-friendly activities throughout the Mission District.

In addition, hundreds of walls and fences throughout the area are painted with colorful murals that are best experienced through a leisurely walking tour.

Schools

Mission Dolores and Inner Mission are zoned to the Mission Preparatory and San Francisco Unified School Districts. Highlights include:

  • Mission Preparatory, Public (Charter), K-8
  • George R. Moscone Elementary, Public, K-5
